But Milk Is Important

"But Milk Is Important" is my graduation film at Volda University College, Norway. It was made together with Anna Mantzaris and we spent a little over a year to make it.
Its a 10:38 minute long stop motion film using puppets.

Short synopsis:
man with social anxiety gets followed by a naive and clumsy creature. Terrified the man tries to escape, unaware that the creature is actually a helper with slightly unconventional methods...

"But Milk Is Important" is currently being screened around festivals.

The puppets are beautiful, by the way, especially how traditionally Norwegian he looks- did they teach you all of this in the animation university?
How did you make so many lovely faces for him? : ) xx

I'll send you the link :)
Thank you very much! I must admit I would very much like to have a sweater like that myself hehe!
You can read and look more about the making process on our production blog:

The university teaches some but a lot is self taught by sharing knowledge with friends and classmates and looking on different inspirations on the internet. There is also good tutorials all around for different things too :)

  4. I saw it today at Zlin Film Fest, it's wonderful!

I had been wondering what that girl's monster is untill I found some interview with you, where it was stated that she suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. I totally missed her not stepping on the lines (not a surprise I guess). And I'm also quite puzzled about what happened to the man with milk in the street (did he die?)

So I would very much like to see it again. Could you please give me a link to the online version too? My e-mail is matejDOTkocianSOMETHINGgmailDOTcom. Thank you :-)

    1. Hello Matej! Thank you very much!

Yea the cuts in the train are quite fast so its not the easiest detail to spot first time watching. You are not the first to miss it hehe.
Her creature is a more physical creature while the man's creature is more psychological.

Sadly yes, that man dies. He gets some sort of heart attack. The man then realizes he wont be able to get milk, almost worrying more about the milk than the poor man lying in the street..

Happy you want to watch it again, link sent!

  16. Hello Mr Bjørnsen,

I have seen your film with my girlfriend last year at the Animateka festival in Ljubljana and we loved it! It shows that you put a lot of work into it and it is great when animation has such amount of nice warm detail and a thought-provoking story as well.

We remembered it a few weeks ago and since apply the "but ... is important" phrase to pretty much everything :). I went looking around the web to see it again ... can I ask you for the link also? markokuder {.at.} gmail.com

Thank you and looking forward to your next work,

  17. Hello Eirik
I would love to see your animation! I'm working with stop motion myself for my bachelor, and would love to get some inspiration.
    My mail is: isabella_t_hamid@dskd.dk

Can I ask you what school you have been studying at?
I'm currently studying at the Kolding School of Design in Denmark, but I'm looking for another school where I can take my masters. I'm searching for a school with more focus on storytelling, illustration and animation.

I'm looking forward to hear from you
    Thank you

    Best wishes Isabella

    1. Hello Isabella!

Glad to see you are interested in our animation film :)

You have a really good animation school in Denmark called the Animation Workshop. You probably know about it? Its mainly 2d and 3d but with a lot of illustration work and animation. Royal College of art in the UK is also known for having some students who have done some really good films with excellent storytelling. There you can do masters at least.

I studied 2 years in art school before attending Volda University College and took a bachelor degree.
